Recent research in Switzerland shows that green roofs increase the biodiversity of bugs in urban areas, particularly bugs that crawl but don’t fly. But for flying bugs, especially bees, green roofs may be even more important – providing a great way for them to connect to more ecosystems, and more food sources. The University of Minnesota newspaper Minnesota Daily recently published an interesting article about a possible expansion of sustainable roof technologies, including green roofs and beekeeping, in the Southeast Como neighborhood of Minneapolis. “Solar isn’t the only game in town when it comes to unused roof space,” he said.
